Part A

  In this section of the test, you will hear 10 short statements. When you hear each statement, read the four possible answers marked A, B C and D, and decide which one is closest in meaning to the statemet you have heard. Then, on the ANSWER SHEET, find the number of the question and mark your choice of answer. (20%)

  George Anderson is a psychologist. He talks about what stress does to our Bodies and what we can do about stress.

  "When we are very frightened and worried our bodies produce certain (1) to help us fight what is troubling us. Unfortunately thest chemicals produce the (2) needed to run away fast from an object of (3), and in modern life that's often impossible. If we don't (4) these chemicals, or if we produce too many of them, they may actually harm us. The parts of the body that are most (5) by stress are the stomach, heart, skin, head and back. Stess can cause car accidents, heart attacks, and (6), and may even drive people to.

  Our living and working conditions may put us under stress (8) in large cities, traffic jams, competition for jobs, uncertainty about the future, any big change in our lives, may be (9). Some British doctors have pointed out that one of Britain's worst flu waves came within weeks of the country changing to (10). Also if you have changed jobs or moved house in recent months you are more (11) to fall ill than if you haven't. And more people commit suicide in times of (12).

  As with all illnesses prevention is better than cure. A very (13) danger signal is the inability to relax. 'When you're taking work home, when you can't (14) an evening with friends, when you have't time for outdoor exercise that - is the time to stop and ask yourself whether your present lift really suits you', says one family doctor. 'Then it's time to join a relaxation class, or (15) dancing, painting or gardening'.

  In this section of the test, you will hear several news broadcasts from foreign broadcast corporations. You will hear them only once. After each one, you will hear some questions. You will hear each question only once. When you hear the question, write down your answer in English.(30%)
